Chapter 5

Mack woke up to light pouring in the window. Pulling the cover over his head, he vaguely remembered opening the curtains last night to realize no moon could be found in the sky. Then he’d made notes from his conversation with Hazel about her beginning in the industry and wrote a reminder to ask her trainer what he’d seen in the amateur fighter. When he crawled into bed, he couldn’t stop thinking about Hazel kissing him. About how he had never wanted her to stop.

Blindly reaching out to the nightstand, he felt for his watch or cell phone. Finally, his fingers grabbed his watch band and pulled it beneath the comforter. Only, he couldn’t read it. Sighing, he lifted the corner to let in enough light to read the face.

6:59 A.M.

He groaned. His normal day didn’t start until at least eight, but these past two days of waking early were worth it. He was in Colorado interviewing Hazel “Bear Hug” Metcalf for the final article of her career. And telling this gorgeous, kind, compassionate, and basically perfect woman that he couldn’t kiss her while alone in a cabin in the woods because he needed to remain unbiased damn near killed him.

A disbelieving snort escaped him, and he pulled the topmost cover under his chin.

He hadn’t been unbiased about Hazel since two seconds after they bumped into one another that arena hallway. From the moment he met her eyes and she smiled, he’d essentially stepped into her corner as an invisible member of her team. However, as stupid as it felt and as unhappy as it made him, he’d done the right thing last night.

Climbing out of bed, he shivered at the chill in the air. He dressed quickly and pulled on his best pair of socks before going to the bathroom to complete his morning routine. Refreshed, he took his shaving kit back to his room before heading toward the kitchen and the smell of coffee.

Hazel smiled as he entered and wished her a good morning. She drank the last of what appeared to be another protein shake. Bundled against the cold, she seemed comfortable and wide awake. “There is leftover bacon, sausage, and biscuits from the guys’ breakfast yesterday in the two blue Tupperware bowls. There are also fruit cups, oatmeal, or meal-replacement shakes.”

He only hesitated a moment before pulling out the Tupperware from the fridge. She’d already set a mug, plate, and silverware out on the counter for him. He loaded the plate down and popped it in the microwave before putting the containers away and fixing a cup of the coffee. He’d spied sugar and creamer last night while hunting for snacks and doctored it to the perfect color.

Leaning against the counter, he took a careful sip. “How long have you been awake?”

She grinned. “Vin didn’t turn off his alarms, which start going off every morning at five-thirty. I’m almost certain he left them active on purpose, knowing I’d have to go upstairs to turn them off, which would get my blood pumping enough I wouldn’t be able to go back to sleep.
